Up In The Air …. Down And Out

December 30th, 2009 by Tim Giehll

I had a chance to see the movie Up In The Air and aside from the good plot and excellent actors, it presented HR Professionals in the worst light imaginable. As the Outsourcing Sourcing Consultant (George Clooney) flew around the country firing people on a daily basis, the impact on these employees was minimualized with short vidoe clips of their reactions.

As any HR professional could guess, the emotions of the fired employees ranged from anger, to surprise, to profanity, to disbelief and in one case suicide. The movie clearly showed how some firms are so unemotional, that they bring in an outsider to do the dirty work of terminations. The movie Up In The Air is very timely in light of all the mass layoffs in 2009 and it clearly show how poor workforce planning can tear apart employees.

That is where Human Capital Supply Chains can start to change the situation portrayed in the movie. An integrated Human Capital Supply Chain that integrates corporations with their suppliers enables employees to MOVE between employers or assignments rather than being TERMINATED and left to struggle on their own. MOVING seemlessly between employer #1 to a staffing firm and then to employer #2, is a much better solution than throwing employees out the door.

This approach gives employers a saftey net for excess employees and a source of good candidates for other firms. “There has to be a better way” for businesses to manage their workforces and provide good solid employees with a more secure future. It is time for CEOs and HR Executives to STOP the current attitude of “wack them and stack them” towards their employees. I can’t think of a better reason for implementing a Human Capital Supply Chain philosopy at your company.
