It’s that time of the year again! College grads are hitting the workforce, and their prospects look better than the rest of the population’s.
According to a recent article on ere.net (a helpful source of recruiting news), the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ Hiring Index reports a recent jump in both recruiting and hiring of college students.
The article also states that these bumps counteract a recent downward trend. Below are a few more details from the article:
- The outlook for college hiring in 2011 was 13.5 percent higher than the outlook in 2010.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: LinkedIn is a great tool for recruiters!
The company has a bunch of products that can help any recruiting professional make the most of the world’s biggest professional network.
Fortunately a lot of LinkedIn’s material is free and you can find out more in the following 3 links. If you check out their Corporate Recruiting Solutions Resources page, for example, you’ll find dozens of whitepapers, webcasts, brochures, and datasheets about recruiting in general and LinkedIn in particular. The Webcast page has a list of upcoming webcasts (nine in June alone). The blog is also quite good.

I have twice used my discussions with my daughter to inspire blogs. Her and I frequently discuss the ways in which the worlds of business and the world of art and literature coincide. Recruiting software – and recruiting strategy in general – needs to make the leap into the mobile age sooner than later.
The reason for this is simple: recruiters need to go where the candidates are. Thirty years ago, candidates routinely looked at the classified jobs section of the newspaper every Sunday. Now, they check their mobile devices every hour. And the numbers are staggering: over 4 billion mobile connections worldwide and over 500 million texts sent across mobile devices every day in the U.S. alone. (Do you have other statistics? Although I could have done a year-end retrospective in December like everyone else, I wanted to wait and see the last unemployment number first. Unfortunately, the number – 9.4% — wasn’t what anyone was hoping to see. Analysts and commentators everywhere, still eager for any small bit of good economic news, seemed to unilaterally pounce on the number as a sign that things are improving slowly. That’s probably true, but it’s not too hard to find analysts who remain pessimistic. And since the country started out 2010 with an unemployment rate of 9.8%, it’s hard not to be pessimistic myself. No matter how you cut it, 9.4% still represent about 14 MILLION unemployed Americans.

What is the best way to determine the real salary expectation of a job seeker or current employee? First, do NOT assume anything !!

This is an especially pertinent question in a time of high unemployment. Because of the number of job seekers out there, employers can offer lower-than-usual salaries to prospects. If staffing services don’t help their job seekers have realistic and workable salary expectations, they will find it hard to make placements.
